Stephen Larson has a broad intellectual property and antitrust practice, having handled cases involving patent, antitrust, trade secret, trademark, and breach of contract matters. His current practice primarily involves handling complex patent and antitrust cases.
In 2014, Stephen served as trial counsel for Masimo Corporation in a three-week jury trial against Philips Electronics North America Corp. and Philips Medizin Systeme Böblingen GmbH. Masimo obtained a $466 million verdict based on infringement of its patents relating to pulse oximetry technology. The verdict was featured in The National Law Journal's "Top Verdicts of 2014" as the top intellectual property verdict and number 5 verdict overall, and was also listed as the "Top IP Award of 2014" by Law360.
In 2015, he represented Masimo in patent and antitrust litigation with Shenzhen Mindray Bio-Medical Tech. Co. Ltd. and Mindray DS USA in California and New Jersey. Stephen had a primary role in defending Masimo against antitrust claims alleging monopolization, attempted monopolization, conspiracy, group boycott, tying and restraint of trade.

Representative Matters
- Masimo Corp. v. Philips Electronics North America Corp. and Philips Medizin Systeme Boblingen GmbH: Currently representing Masimo in patent and antitrust litigation in Delaware involving pulse-oximetry medical devices.
- Masimo Corp. v. Shenzhen Mindray Bio-Medical Tech. Co. Ltd. and Mindray DS USA (C.D. Cal. & D.N.J. 2015): Represented Masimo in patent, antitrust and breach-of-contract litigation in California and New Jersey. Had primary role in defending Masimo against antitrust claims alleging monopolization, attempted monopolization, conspiracy, group boycott, tying and restraint of trade.
- Masimo Corp. v. Philips Electronics North America Corp. and Philips Medizin Systeme Boblingen GmbH. (D. Del. 2014). Represented Masimo in patent litigation involving pulse-oximetry resulting in a jury verdict of over $466 million for lost-profits damages against Philips for infringing two Masimo patents. The jury also rejected Philips’s infringement claims seeking $169 million.
- Gunn v. Minton (S. Ct. 2013). Drafted amicus brief cited by the petitioner during recent oral argument at the Supreme Court regarding the scope of federal jurisdiction over patent law issues.
- Essential Medical Devices Inc. v. Masimo Corporation (Del. 2012). Defended Masimo in a patent infringement case that resulted in an early dismissal with prejudice of plaintiff’s claims and a covenant not to sue on the asserted patent.
- Bigfoot Ventures, LLC v. Compania Mexicana de Aviacion, S.A. de C.V. dba Mexicana Airlines, (S.D. Cal. 2010). Represented Mexicana Airlines in a website domain name ownership dispute that resulted in a summary judgment decision disposing of all of Bigfoot Ventures' affirmative defenses.
- I-FLOW Corporation v. Wolf Medical Supply, Inc. (C.D. Cal. 2010). Represented I-FLOW in a patent infringement case that resulted in a preliminary injunction and settlement.
- Tessera, Inc. v. United Test and Assembly Center Ltd. (N.D. Cal. 2008). Represented Tessera in a breach of contract action that resulted in a settlement entitling Tessera to damages and future royalties.
- In the Matter of Certain Semiconductor Chips with Minimized Chip Package Size and Products Containing Same (USITC 2008). Represented Tessera in a patent enforcement action before the United States International Trade Commission that resulted in an exclusion order upheld by Federal Circuit.
- Tessera, Inc. v. Amkor Technology, Inc. (Arbitration 2008). Represented Tessera in an arbitration that resulted in an award for Tessera based on a breach of a patent license agreement.
- CooperVision, Inc. v. CIBA Vision, Inc. (Del. 2007). Represented CooperVision in a patent infringement case that resulted in settlement.
